The first shot, (above) focused on the closest candle (.07m).
Notice that the following candles, are out of focus. The apature
is set at 8, and this is the maximum depth of field (DOF) I
could get. (the candles are about 2 inches tall)
I then took 4 more exposures, ( A good, sturdy tripod is ESSENTIAL)
all focused a little bit farther back in the scene. (Manual
focus)
In Photoshop, I then took each of those 4 photos, copied, and
pasted them on top of the 1st shot as layers.
Then I lassoed a portion of layer 2 thru 5 that was in focus,
inverted each selection, and deleted what I didn't need.
Below are the results of the other layers, which were stacked
on top of one another in the finished product.

Layer 2
The second shot is focused on the next row of candles, (.10m) |

Layer 3
,14m |

Layer 4
.18m |

Layer 5
In the finished product, this ended up as the top layer, with #4
being under it then 3, 2, and 1 as the background, and first row
of candles.
.30m |
To
finish the photo, I cloned the background problem in the upper right,
adjusted the contrast, and unsharp masked it, and added a frame.

Below is the original first layer (background)
